Small Schools Athletics Federation (SSAF) Technical Guidelines Under 20 Basketball

League Rules

 

• Unless specifically stated, the rules of basketball adopted by the National Federation of State High School Associations (2010-11) will be used.

 

• These rules apply to both Under 20 Boys’ and Girls’ teams.

 

• Teams are allowed a full court press at any time during the game.

 

• Teams are allowed to play both man-to-man and zone defence.

 

• Teams may only dress a maximum of 15 players per game, and have no other players on the bench.

 

• All games are four 8-minute quarters stop time.

 

• T-shirts worn underneath jerseys must be the same colour as the dominant colour of the jersey.

 

• All games will be played with a ball size 6 (28.5) for girls and size 7 for boys.

 

• Home team must have alternate numbered jerseys available if jerseys between teams are too similar, and the home team must change.

 

• Referees will be arranged by the league convenor along with the referee coordinator for the area. A competent staff member may officiate the game, if and only if referees fail to arrive and both coaches agree, but the game will not count for league standings.

 

• Sportsmanship and fair play are to be displayed at all times by players, coaches and fans.

 

• If a player or coach is ejected from a game for unsportsmanlike behaviour they are automatically suspended for the next game the team plays and it must be reported to the SSAF executive.

 

• There will be a maximum plus or minus of 15 for scoring and standings purposes. This is to promote sportsmanship and fair play, and to discourage running up scores.

 

• In the event of a tie after 4 regulation quarters, 4 minute overtime periods will be played as needed to break the tie.

 

 

Playoffs

 

• All ties in the standings are broken by the head to head game played between the teams.

 

• Playoff format will vary year to year based on numbers of teams in the league. This rule is outlined in the rules sent out to all teams from the convenor at the beginning of the season.

 

• There is to be a minimum 30 minute break between semi-finals and finals in back-to-back game situations for league play championships.

 

• Whenever possible, convenors should do their best to attempt to make the home and away scheduling as fair as possible for all participating schools.

 

 

 

Team Responsibilities

 

• All teams must hand in their school’s non-play dates to the convenor when requested to do so. All schedules are made around these dates and the convenor needs time to send out several copies of a schedule to ensure it is accurate and approved by all teams.

 

• All teams must complete the league eligibility sheet and fax or email it to the league convenor within the specified time frame.

 

• In the north division, referee fees will be deducted from their SSAF accounts. In the south, referees are required to be paid on site.

 

• The home team is required to have an official triplicate Basketball Ontario game sheet. These are available from Basketball Ontario at the Sport Alliance building located at 3 Concorde Gate, Toronto. They may be contacted at 416-426 -7200.

 

• Host schools must have scorers and timers for the game. A single timer and a single scorer may be used if they are trained and acceptable to the referee. The same timer and scorer should be employed throughout the game. These minor officials shall be located at the scorers and timers table on the side of the court.

 

• The home team is responsible for emailing the results to the league convenor within 24 hours or risk a default at a score of 15-0, regardless of the game outcome.

 

• Teams that cannot compete on the day of a game due to lack of players will forfeit the game, at a score of   15-0. This team will be required to pay the full referee fees for that game. As weather can play a factor in a team’s ability to get to facilities, schools should make a decision by noon of a game day and contact all schools involved, including the convenor if they cannot make the game. If a game is cancelled due to weather, a reschedule date will be agreed upon by all schools involved and the convenor.

 

• Jewellery must be removed prior to the start of a game. This includes, but is not limited to any plastic or metal items.

 

• Each team must have alternate colour numbered pinneys or jerseys in case of colour conflict. The Home Team will change jerseys.

 

• Due to spatial limitations, there can be no more than 2 adults (coaches) on the bench. In addition, only 1 coach may stand at a time during the game.
